American Board of Opticianry

ABO, the American Board of Opticianry and NCLE, the National Contact Lens Examiners are national not-for- profit organizations for the voluntary certification of ophthalmic dispensers. ABO certifies opticians, who are those that dispense and work with spectacles, and NCLE certifies those ophthalmic dispensers who fit and work with contact lenses. Both organizations have the same purpose: to identify qualified ophthalmic dispensers for the public and for the ophthalmic community by certifying those who pass the professionally developed examinations. They also encourage growth of optical skills with continuing education and approve continuing education programs for recertification. Madison Area Technical College (MATC) is the technical and community college for the greater Madison, Wisconsin area. MATC offers a complete Optometric Technician Program that is taught completely online, meaning you will not be required to come to the Madison campus. However, the online optometric program courses are designed for individuals employed in an eye care setting. This unique program prepares you for a career as an Optometric Assistant or Optician where you will test patients for visual acuity, depth perception and color blindness. You will also learn the use of precision optical instruments and lens-edging machines. Coursework includes frame selection, prescription analysis, manufacturing of eyeglasses, fitting techniques for spectacles and contact lenses and common eye disorders. Classes are offered in a classroom and lab setting, and training includes an externship in a medical or retail facility. Exam certification preparation for national licensure is covered. Optical/Optometric Assistant program graduates are prepared for jobs such as Optical Assistant, Optometric Assistant, Optical Laboratory Technician and Optical Sales Representative.
